There's nothing there.
Just you, and the rest of them. Squints and FBI agents, all together.
Everybody looks around, but there's nothing but sand, and rocks, and pebbles and dust. People talking and moving and standing and talking again. You'd like for them to shut up, to help you concentrate, think think think about the single spot where they might be. Where she might be. There's nothing on your mind but silence, while you're frantically looking for something to move, shift or slither, to help you find her.

Then it happens.
Puff. Something moves on the surface.
Half a second, and you're running. You're the only one to notice, or maybe not, maybe you're just the only one fast enough to react. An athlete running on burning ground. 10 feet. 20. 30 and 40. 60 feet away and you're finally there, on your knees, elbow deep in the sand, shoveling away everything between you two.

Her hand breaks the surface and there she is, covered in dirt.

She's fine.

You can both breathe again now.
